What the result means
FIT means all entered closed, open, loading and representative-footwear checks pass against your chosen clearance and measured dimensions, with at least 1 inch of calculated margin. MARGINAL means all checks pass but one calculated margin is under 1 inch. The 1-inch rule is an editorial warning band, not a safety or accessibility threshold. Neither result means the exact product will be usable or safe. Verify its assembled dimensions, moving parts, mounting instructions, baseboard treatment and actual internal dimensions. Calculations and assumptions are editorial; they do not establish compliance, safety, stability, manufacturer capacity, or product suitability.
DOES NOT FIT means at least one required entered check fails. UNRESOLVED — MEASURE OR VERIFY means the space measurements or exact candidate dimensions are not verified, so the calculator refuses to return a positive fit result. These labels are editorial planning outputs, not manufacturer or accessibility classifications.
Measure in five passes
- Measure from the finished wall to the actual boundary you must preserve. Check several points; walls, trim and floors vary.
- Choose the route clearance before comparing products. Consider household movement, carried items, door operation and any requirements that govern your setting.
- Record closed depth, every moving-part projection and the standing/loading position separately. A tilt-out bin, drawer, door or handle can project beyond the fixed cabinet.
- Mark the closed footprint, full-open footprint and loading position with removable tape. Rehearse opening, loading and closing without blocking the route.
- Measure representative footwear. Include the widest pair, longest shoe, tallest boot, deepest pair and any pair that must remain in daily rotation.

Stop and remeasure when evidence is missing
Do not infer open projection from closed depth, capacity from external width, or mounting suitability from a product photo. If the exact manual does not show the required fastening method, wall context, rear clearance or assembly envelope, treat that condition as unresolved. U.S. Access Board guidance describes defined route and door requirements in covered accessible settings; it is not a universal target for every private-home entryway. Follow the requirements that govern your location.
